The cream of European soccer will shortly be served up for
four deserving young Grand Bahamian sports fans.
The quartet, chosen from among the attendees of this year’s
Sir Jack Hayward English Premier League Soccer Camp, will be traveling to Miami
on an all-expenses-paid trip to watch two top teams fight it out for the
prestigious Guinness Champions Cup.
The two will be the survivors of an eight-team tournament
being played in cities across the US and include this year’s Premier League
winners and runners up, Manchester City and Liverpool; the Greek Super League
champions Olympiakos; and Roma, Italian league runners up.
Other teams taking part include the iconic duo Manchester
United, claimed by many to be the most famous soccer club in the world, and
Real Madrid, winner of the Spanish league 32 times.
The final takes place at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami on
August 4 and in the enthusiastic crowd will be four children chosen from among
the between 100 and 200 kids expected to attend the camp. They will be selected by professional
visiting coaches for their all-round attitude during the week-long event.
“It won’t just be their personal skills being judged. It will be their sportsmanship and their
ability to be team players. Soccer is a
team sport and being able to contribute positively to your team is a key
competence,” said camp organiser Richard Malcolm.
“This is the 10th year of what has become the
most popular summer camp on the island and we wanted to mark that fact with
something special for the kids to strive for.
The English Premier was more than happy to help us achieve that end by
supporting this trip.
“Anyone in Freeport who subscribes to cable or satellite TV
can watch top-class soccer at home. Going
to such a game in the flesh is a wholly different experience not available in
the Bahamas and the four who are going to be chosen will find it mind-blowing."
“The key is that you have to be at the camp if you want to
get this chance. That means signing up in the next month.”
The camp is hosted as usual by the Freeport Rugby and
Football Club at the club’s fields in East Settlers Way. It takes place from June 23 to June 27 and
will offer a range of goodies, including top-class international coaches and two
full uniforms to use during the camp and to keep afterwards.
Registration is already underway and forms are available
from this website (SEE BELOW) as well as at www.rugbyfootballbahamas.com Completed forms can be handed in at Town and
Country, Yellow Pine Street; Animale, at Port Lucaya Marketplace; or at the
club in the evenings.
