Sure, it’s fun to pepper in a few trendy pieces into your seasonal
wardrobe, but a wardrobe that’s really worth its weight in gold is
filled with quality, classic pieces that remain in fashion year after
year. These are your wardrobe staples. Here are 4 that will prove
invaluable for the upcoming fall months.
Silk Blouse
A
feminine, silk or silk chiffon blouse is a wardrobe staple that can work
wonderfully all year round, but is a real workhorse when the weather
cools down a bit. A great collared version with long sleeves and a
button front in a flattering but not overly frilly print will bring you
years of wear. In warmer weather, roll up the sleeves and pair with flat
front pants for an effortlessly chic look. Slip under the blazer of
your pantsuit to soften up your power suit look. Or pair with a skirt
and cardigan for a casual Friday look. For a clean and strikingly
classic look, choose a light, feminine white blouse instead of a print.
Streamlined with darts, your aim should be for a tailored look that fits
perfectly, so don’t be shy to spend a little extra on this wardrobe
staple.

Shift Dress
A shift dress is a short sleeve or
sleeveless dress that is loose fitting and flattering on many frames.
It’s a tried and true silhouette that has stood the test of time and is a
great option for your ‘go to’ dress. The waist of a shift dress is
characteristically de-emphasized, which makes it suitable for all day
wear and moving around comfortably while at the office or running
errands. If you prefer an hourglass silhouette, simply add a belt to
your look to cinch in the waist.
Chances are you have a few
little black dresses in your wardrobe arsenal. Add some interest to a
shift dress by choosing a bold color that works beautifully for your
complexion. Your ‘little colored shift dress’ can be worn year after
year and is a great foundation piece for layering during fall.

J Crew Cashmere Cardigan

Cardigan
Given
our climate, there is rarely need for a warm cover up thicker than a
traditional cardigan, so investing in great ones are worthwhile. Unless
you’re a globe trotter who needs your wardrobe to do double duty here
and in colder climates, cashmere may be too warm to wear comfortably in
our climate, so opt for a well made cotton version instead. Cardigans
come in a myriad of styles - oversized and chunky, unstructured shawl
versions, cropped and fitted and traditional styles. For your staple,
stick to a traditional style that is long sleeve and fits comfortably
with a layer underneath. With a traditional style you can wear it
buttoned up for a classic look or unbuttoned and belted for a more
deconstructed look.

Marc Jacobs Alyona quilted leather tote

Carry-all Tote
In the summer months we
all scale down - less clothes to keep cool, less makeup to avoid
melting, shorter hair for quicker styling. During the fall is when we
seem to pile it back on. Which means the need for a bigger bag to hold
all of the ‘essentials’ that went on vacation during the summer. Finding
a tote that can fit all of your items but that’s still sleek and chic
is sometimes no easy task. Because your tote is likely to be worn
everyday, choose an authentic leather version that will hold the weight
of your wares and withstand the wear and tear of everyday use. For a
classic version, avoid excessive zippers, studs and other
embellishments. A quality leather tote will look rich without all the
extra frills. Stick with a neutral color, but this does not necessarily
mean brown or black. Taupe, olive green or even a rust hue will go well
with many of the colors in your wardrobe but is still not as common as a
black or brown bag.
Dressing for fall can be fun. With more
manageable temperatures you can play around with more of the items in
your closet to create flattering looks. Staring with a solid base of
classic staples makes it easier to add in more fun elements to really
make the look your own.
